A Doula is a professionally trained labor support person. She is there to be your compassionate companion, emotionally supporting you through your pregnancy, birth and immediate postpartum. As doulas ourselves, we recognize the need to have these wonderful women by your side during your birth. We encourage all families who are considering hiring a doula, to do some homework and check with your doulas to see how she can specifically help you. Doulas come with a variety of philosophies and having one that matches your own is extremely important. Making sure the right woman is by your side can significantly change your entire birth experience. We recognize that diversity is important in the doula profession and honor all of doulas who are working night and day to support families in birth.
A doula is often just one piece of the pie when considering preparing for an unmedicated, holistic birth experience. Her presence often brings an undeniable change to the entire room. Peacefulness, confidence, compassion, knowledge and 100% attention are just a few the common experiences she offers.

What is A Holistic Doula?
We differentiate this term "holistic" to imply a doula who embraces the concept of body, mind and spirit during birth. She realizes there is a whole ("wholistic) lot more going on here than meets the eye. Mystery, unseen energy, thoughts, fears, and a vortex that often stops time. A holistic doula considers not only what happens on a physical level at birth but what's going on behind the scenes. Although this term is newer to the vocabulary, it specifies a doula who has taken interest in understanding birth beyond what happens in the body.
With the diversity in doulas available these days, it's very important to ask questions and understand what your doula plans to "do" and to "be" during your birth. What is going on in a doula's mind is very impactful on a birth experience. Finding out her philosophies, comfort levels inside the experience and her ability to let go of control and just be with you at birth can all signify where she is comfortable in this definition.
Ask a lot of questions! There are some wonderful doulas out there and they do this work because they generally care about you and about your birth. |
